Training
The best journalists constantly strive to improve their craft and become even better. The best way to become better is through taking advantage of every training opportunity you can.
Many news organizations offer in-house training, but the best way to learn is to interact with the best minds in the business. The way to find them is through the many wonderful seminars and conferences offered by the leading journalism organizations in the country.
It would behoove you to be aware of upcoming conferences and seminars. To borrow a bit of jargon, you should be “proactive” in seeking out these opportunities and pitching them to your editors. Realize, however, that most newspapers have a limited training budget each year. Any time that you can, you ought to apply for fellowships and sponsorships to training events.
Here’s a list of wonderful organizations whose conferences and seminars, I have benefited from over the past few years.
- American Press Institute
- ASNE
- Casey Center on Children and Families
- Investigative Reporters & Editors
- Journalism Training
- Knight New Media Center
- Nieman program on Narrative Writing
- The Poynter Institute
- South Asian Journalists Association
In addition, there are several organizations that offer fantastic online resources for improving your craft. Check out the tutorials and classes offered by News University.
